Wild Rose Pottery was established by Maureen & Barry Payne in 1975. It has evolved into a family affair. Maureen is the original potter having been trained in England before immigrating to Canada in 1967. She graduated with an Advanced Ceramic Diploma from the Cambridge Institute & Balls Park College Hertfordshire. She has been practicing her art continuously since that time primarily making functional stoneware pottery. Although Barry’s career was in the aerospace industry with a Physics degree from University of Leicester UK, he has always been active in the pottery field with particular interest in Raku and hand built forms including a wide range of tile designs.
Daughter Sarah and son Richard have always been very much involved in the pottery. Although not formally trained, they have had their hands in the clay since very small children. Sarah is very good at tile decoration and Richard helps with all the heavy jobs in the pottery studio, especially pugging the clay.
In 2011, Wild Rose developed a line of popular Celtic Art Tiles. The tiles are inspired by ancient Celtic designs and their evolution into decorative wall tiles is the unique creation of Maureen and Barry. The tile itself is made from stoneware clay. They are then painted with two coats of colored glaze and a top coat of clear glaze. The careful choice of clay and glazes and the firing technique combine to give the beautiful coloring and the subtle glazing reminiscent of antique pottery.
