Did You Know? The earliest surviving manuscript from Ireland is the Cathach, meaning Battler. The greatest significance of this book, which dates from the late 6th century, is that it demonstrates the beginnings of the tradition of decorated capital letters. As time went on, these capital letters became more ornate and artistic, so by the time the book of Kells was produced, around the year 800, manuscripts created in Ireland were unrivaled in all of Europe for the exquisiteness of their art. They were also renowned for the striking black quality of their ink, which was made from Oak galls.

About the Artist. Aime Nolan Ryan of The Indie Celt was born and grew up on the west coast of Ireland in County Clare. Aime attended the University of Galway in Ireland where she studied archaelogy, discovering her love for the earliest form of Irish writing, Ogham. She now resides in the Chicagoland area with her husband and children but still return to Ireland every summer to soak up more Irish culture and search for new creative inspiration.
